What Do I Do After I Hit A Parked Car?

If you hit a parked car, by law you are required to find the owner. This can be a difficult task especially if you hit a parked car in the parking lot of a mall or an apartment complex. However, if you cannot find the owner of the vehicle, you should leave a note on the car in plain sight with your information such as your name and telephone number. You should also call the police. The police will be able to file a car accident report so the person that owns the parked car you hit will be able to receive compensation for the damages. You may also want to contact a car accident attorney about the details surrounding the accident.

Do not drive away and act as if you did not hit the car. If damages were done to the other car, you are more than likely liable for the damages according to the laws in your state. A witness may have seen the accident and you could be charged with leaving the scene of a car accident.

Do not accept blame even if you hit a parked car. There could be reasons that the accident occurred that did not put you at blame such as lighting in the parking garage, obstructions in your view, the other car was not parked properly, and so on and so forth. Learn your rights before you take the blame for any accident. Talking to an accident attorney before you insurance company takes your statement may be the best decision in your case.
