Car Accident Insurance In Florida

Every state in the US has automobile insurance requirements that apply to residents of the state. In Florida, you must have insurance to show you can take financial responsibility for any incident in which your vehicle may have been in a car accident.

In Florida there are two laws governing auto insurance for residents - Financial Responsibility Law and No-Fault Law.

The Financial Responsibility Law is coverage for accidents in which you were at fault. By Florida law, you must carry a specific amount of coverage, which includes
  • $10,000 for one person in bodily injury liability
  • $20,000 for two or more people in bodily injury liability
  • $10,000 per crash in property damage liability
  • $30,000 in combined single limits
The No-Fault Law is coverage for accidents that occur without any injuries to you or others. By Florida law, you must carry a specific amount of coverage, which includes
  • $10,000 per person/accident in personal injury protection
  • $10,000 per crash in property damage liability
The two laws combines are basic coverage and usually will not cover all the bills and damages often seen in automobile accidents.

Once you have contacted an insurance carrier and have your premium you will receive the FDHSMV information along with your insurance ID car. You should place the ID card in your car and keep it with your car at all times. If you do not have proof of insurance at the time of being stopped by a police officer for a traffic violation or at the time of an accident your driving privileges can be suspended, as well as your registration and license plate for your car for up to three years unless you can show proof of insurance.

If your Florida driver’s license has been suspended due to no proof of insurance, there are other fees that you will have to pay in order to reinstate your driver’s license.
